Bird populations are plummeting in North America, according to a recently released study by The Audubon Society. In the past 40 years, twenty common bird species have suffered a 68% decline in population. Destruction of habitat and increasing migratory obstacles seem to be the primary culprits for this rapid decline.

About half of the wetlands and 70 percent of the prairie grasslands in the U.S. have been lost. Invasive plant species have taken over native seed and nesting resources and an enormous amount of land is being pulled out of conservation for farming. Further habitat destruction is looming, the US department of Agriculture is considering releasing 24 of the 35 million acres currently regulated and receiving environmental assistance via its Conservation Reserve Program.
Making taking to the airs more foreboding than the prospect of a customs line in Heathrow airport, migratory routes are being seriously disrupted. Each year as many as 975 million birds are killed, by slamming into buildings. Lighted cell-phone towers and wind turbines located near critical flyways are also disrupting migratory navigation. By supporting sound agricultural policies and local habitat protection, perhaps birds won't have to fly on simply a wing and a prayer.
